Here is the most recent Smooth News article containing information on the upcoming summer, the season of smoothness!

Ahh, It's Summer - the season of smoothness!

It's definitely heating up outside. It's 86 degrees in Minneapolis today for goodness sakes! Summer is upon us.

For kids, the best thing about summer is obviously, NO SCHOOL. But even if you've been out of school for a long time there's lots to love about the summertime: long balmy days spent poolside, the anticipation of the long awaited summer vacation, and picnics, just to name a few. And people just seem happier in the summer.

So don't let dry, flaking and/or peeling skin put a damper on your summer fun! Here are a few realy great reasons to stock up on Simple Sugars scrubs so that you have a smooth, smooth summer!

1) Tank tops, shorts, sundresses and bathing suits all mean you'll be showing more skin in the summertime than during any other season. Be a head turner for the right reason: your soft, smooth glowing skin! Scrub every day to keep your skin looking it's very best.

2) There's nothing like jumping in a pool to get a break from the sweltering heat, but that chlorine can wreak havoc on your skin! Take your scrub to the pool and use it after you're done swimming to prevent the pool chemicals from doing a number on your skin.

3) The summer sun feels so good, but we all know about the bigtime damage it can cause. BE CAREFUL IN THE SUN! (check out this link to our Tanning 101 article on the Simple Sugars blog) Scrubbing after being in the sun, not only feels great, it helps to keep peeling to a minimum and replaces moisture that the sun takes away.

Choose one of our awesome summertime scents, Lemonade or Raspberry and definitely do the Green Tea Facial with Emu Oil (green tea helps battle sun damage!).

Simple Sugars can save the Great Lakes!

We're not even kidding.

You've seen the ads. Yes, companies acutally advertise the fact that their products contain microbeads! Oh so they're destroying the Great Lakes and threatening the ecosystem? Ooops!

Hundreds of skin care products ranging from body wash to hand soap contain plastic microbeads as an exfoliant additive that (literally) slips through the cracks of wastewater treatment plants and leaks into our fresh water sources. Specifically, The Great Lakes, which make up about 20% of the world’s fresh water supply, are particularly threatened by pollution from these tiny plastic particles. While all 5 lakes have been poluted with these pesky particles, Lake Eerie, Lake Ontario, and Lake Michigan have such high levels of plastic pollutants that the problem now has the attention of the media and our policymakers. Lake Ontario tested the highest level of pollution, reaching 1.1 million plastic particles per square kilometer. That's a lot of microbeads! And no wonder since the average tube of face wash contains 350,000 microbeads! It gets worse. All of these tiny plastic beads floating around the lakes that go unseen to the normal human eye look like tasty fish eggs to our underwater friends. So while waste water professionals assure us that the drinking water filter system removes all chances of these plastic beads polluting of drinking water, seafood lovers are still at risk through a bioaccumulation of these chemicals. Fish eat fish, we eat fish, animals eat fish. And yes, microbeads are being found inside the fish.

So how can we prevent the 19 tons of microbeads that slip into our Great Lakes each year? It's pretty easy! STOP USING PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN MICROBEADS! Some of the more popular brands that use microbeads are Neutrogena, Clean and Clear (ironic...) and Aveeno. All brands that promote a "healthy" image through their branding (also ironic...).

Companies are commiting to phasing out the use of these damaging microbeads but until then while our policymakers and environmental organizations are focusing on the legality of the situation we offer another solution that’s good for the environment AND your skin. Get rid of that crap! Stop rubbing plastic on your skin and choose a natural alternative. SIMPLE SUGARS PRODUCTS DO NOT CONTAIN MICROBEADS! Just all natural good stuff that won't harm you, our water supply or the fish that swim in it. Remember, we only have one Earth. Do you part to protect it.

P.S. Here's an app to help you identify products that have microbeads.
